Curious that reading Portuguese authors when I’m in Portugal doesn’t give me the emotional distance needed to appreciate enough their works, like reading Spanish authors when I’m in Spain, or French in France. I always read other languages then the one of the country where I am. However, I always tend to write in the same language of the country where I’m in, - ending up writing in English, because language, is not only culture, but the main plug of communication between those who think and feel and connect. And even between those who don’t. Language or arts or music. Even though arts and music are more universal than any language, because languages can connect as much as disconnect. Maybe that’s why I’m visual artist, so what I create can be understood in a more universal mind without the need of translators changing rhythms and senses to the written words. But then, people no longer think because the obvious is easier to digest and move on. The chocolate cake is nice and this was what I was thinking while eating the bottom of it. Now, I should leave, so I can enjoy the crunchy topping of it. Yes, the surface sometimes can be tastier then the guts of it. But if we don’t go to the guts we will never know if there’s a fondant inside that make us drool. Even more, I mean. And the best part is that I’ll end up sucking my delicious fingers… which is what I do when I’m reading a good book. Sex and culture are much closer than you can imagine, and that’s why we use the tongue to talk. and eat. and lick.
